Conference to highlight UAE safety and health developments

The latest developments in keeping employees safe and healthy in the UAE will be highlighted at a major conference in Abu Dhabi. The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health’s (IOSH) sixth UAE Annual Networking Conference will see the Ministry of Education, the Abu Dhabi Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHAD) and Dubai Municipality provide updates on their work. Safety and health professionals and other business leaders will also be able to hear about future challenges and how they can be overcome. Meanwhile IOSH will use the stage to reveal exciting new developments with its portfolio of training products.

Ahmed El Hadidi, Chair of IOSH’s UAE Branch, said: “By prioritising the safety and health of employees, organisations are investing in their future success. A safe, healthy, creative and engaged workforce leads to increased productivity which in turn drives business performance. Organisations in the UAE and other parts of the world are constantly developing new ways of doing this, often involving new technology. Our networking conference will highlight some of these new initiatives. It will also give delegates the chance to network among themselves, to bring about new ideas and to build new partnerships”.

The keynote address at the event will be provided by a representative from the Ministry of Education. OSHAD will include its Al Adaa system – an electronic application for occupational safety and health – among its updates. Meanwhile Dubai Municipality will provide details of its health and safety inspections within industries.

“We have some exciting presentations planned. We are delighted that the Ministry of Education, OSHAD and Dubai Municipality will be joining us at our event”, added Ahmed El Hadidi.

Other speakers will include Dr Rob Cooling, Director of Health and Safety at WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff and Vice-Chair of IOSH’s UAE Branch, who will examine innovation within health and safety management, Cormac Gilligan from PepsiCo and Jason Woods from the International Powered Access Federation.

The event is being held at the Al Raha Beach Hotel in Abu Dhabi between 8.30am and 4.30pm on Thursday 8 December. It is open to IOSH members, safety and health professionals and other business leaders with an interest in the safety and health of their employees.

IOSH is the Chartered body for health and safety professionals. It has over 1,000 members in the Middle East. The organisation sets standards and campaigns on issues that affect millions of working people across the world.

IOSH activities in the Gulf initially started in 2006, with the formation of the Middle East branch, which has now split into three separate branches – Oman, Qatar and the UAE. These branches have worked to establish close ties with government bodies to promote safe and healthy practices in workplaces.

Through regular branch meetings and networking opportunities, the branches provide a platform for occupational safety and health professionals in the Gulf to learn about developments, share their knowledge and experiences, and discuss topics of common interest.

IOSH, which was founded in 1945 and is based in Leicester in the United Kingdom, is a not for profit organisation. It has international Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) status.
