There are more than 7,000 restaurants of various sizes in Jeddah, which may be able to offer about 20,000 job opportunities for Saudi women, according to Makkah daily.

A team from the Labor Ministry and the hospitality committee of the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) has started visiting restaurants in the city to ascertain the availability of job openings.

The committee’s chairman, Adil Makki, said three members of the team are from the committee and five from the ministry.

“Women can work as restaurant supervisors, receptionists, waitresses, lobby supervisors, makers of soft drinks and chefs.

The chairman said women should only work at the family sections in large restaurants, which have rest rooms for them.

Makki said the team is expected to complete its tours soon and then the doors of restaurants will be opened for women to work.

The rate of joblessness is the highest among women and the Ministry of Labor is making concerted efforts to open new avenues of employment for them.
