Russia and Nuclear energy agency of the Organization for economic cooperation

Russia has extended the international cooperation in scientific research and development on nuclear energy systems of the fourth generation specified with advantaged features in terms of economy and security. The corresponding agreement was signed between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Nuclear energy agency of the Organisation for economic cooperation and development.

 

The Agreement was signed by Mr. Sergey Kirienko, Director General of ROSATOM and Mr. William Magwood, Director General of the OECD NEA. Previously, the Government of the Russian Federation has authorized ROSATOM to sign this document.

 

The purpose for continuation of the cooperation is the joint development of the six most promising concepts of nuclear power systems specified with advantages in terms of economy, safety and radioactive waste management, as well as establishment of criteria and requirements for the fourth generation of nuclear power systems.

 

The extension of the framework agreement meets the scientific, technical and commercial interests of the Russian nuclear industry. This will have a positive impact on the development of the nuclear energy sector and contribute to strengthening of the economic influence of Russia to the world market of innovative nuclear technologies. 

 

"I believe that the IV-th generation reactors are the future of not only nuclear industry, but also the entire world energy sector in general. That is why I believe it is important to continue the international cooperation in this area, "said Mr. Sergey Kirienko, Director General of ROSATOM.

 

It is worth mentioning that last month - June 2015; a number of cooperation documents were signed by Russia and Saudi Arabia on Thursday, after President Putin met with Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Saudi Arabia and Russia signed six agreements in total. One of the most important agreements was in nuclear technology and program for peaceful purposes with Russia’s nuclear agency, Rosatom.

According to Rosatom, the document is the first in the history of Russia-Saudi relations to create a legal framework for cooperation between the nations in the field of nuclear energy. Future joint projects might include construction of nuclear power reactors, provision of services in nuclear fuel cycling, including those for nuclear power stations and research reactor facilities.
