“Knights of the Homeland Performance on Okaz Avenue Embodies Arab Heritage and Civilization

The “Knights of the Homeland” performances at Souk Okaz presented a vivid picture of ancient Arab civilization, embodying different forms of war, peace and trade, with knights on horseback and camel caravans roaming in their traditional dress and depicting events of daily life.

More than 100 camels and 50 horses paraded on Okaz Avenue, interacting with visitors and providing information about the nature of life in olden days in a fun and engaging way. The performances attracted large numbers – with visitors of all ages attending – and highlighted the heritage and historical value of Taif, which is positioning itself as the summer resort destination for Arabs.

Visitors to Souk Okaz can watch a caravan enter Okaz Avenue – laden with goods from the Levant or Yemen – and learn about the handling of goods, auctions, sales and purchases, and can watch camels transport goods within the city or carry passengers.

They can also enjoy watching scenes of horses, such as when they are providing protection in the market, transporting passengers or participating in theatrical shows. Visitors also have the chance to see the tense moments when riders meet in live duals, fighting each other with swords and spears.

More than 2,000 young people have participated as actors to recreate these scenes of traditional Arab life, roaming the markets, avenues and squares of Souk Okaz in costume to represent different personalities, and convey an impression of the history and civilization of Arabs.
