Dow Saudi Arabia and Saudi Food Bank announce winners of food wastage program with Royal Commission school students

Dow Saudi Arabia Companya subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company (Dow), and the Saudi Food Bank (Eta’am) recently announced the winners of a food wastage program for Royal Commission school students. The award ceremony was held in Jubail in the presence of Dow KSA, the Royal commission and Eta’am.

As part of the program, 400 students took part in a two week educational program in partnership with Royal Commission schools. Students from elementary, secondary and high school had access to a series of workshops on the principles of food preservation through interactive learning sessions in the first week. Following this, students had the opportunity to present what they had learned during the second week. Winners of the program were selected based on their ability to provide a sustainable solution to food wastage, effecting long-lasting behavioral change.

Driven by a unique vision to enhance sustainability in KSA, this educational campaign aimed to increase the awareness of the younger generation on the importance of food waste reduction, food preservation and healthy eating in the Eastern province.

“Through the active engagement of employees and partners, we are addressing one of the world’s most pressing problems – Food waste. Approximately 30% of food produced locally goes to waste in Saudi Arabia, and we are confident that education and engagement will create a culture of change and develop a sense of responsibility. We would like to extend this initiative beyond Jubail and create a positive impact across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” said Moosa Al Moosa, Country Leader, Dow, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

In March, 2017, Dow and Eta’am organized the first “Walkathon” in KSA topromote food preservation and food waste reduction in the Kingdom. More than 150 volunteers from both organizations, government officials and members of the public took part in the event.

Dow has been in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for more than 40 years. It is the largest foreign investor in the Kingdom’s petrochemical sector, with a number of strategic investments including Sadara Chemical Company, a joint venture developed by Dow and Saudi Aramco, which has started up all of its 26 world scale manufacturing units in the Sadara Manufacturing Complex – the world’s largest chemical complex ever built in a single phase – in Jubail.
