AbbVie employees set up a new activity lounge and playground to help bring joy to the House of Roses orphanage in Makkah

AbbVie, a research-based global biopharmaceutical company, today announced that more than 35 members of its staff helped to renovate the play facilities and activity lounge at the House of Roses orphanage in Makkah, as part of the company’s fifth annual “Week of Possibilities” global volunteering program. Renovations included a new playground with swings and see-saws, as well as a setting up brand-new activity lounge to provide a recreational environment for the girls staying at the orphanage.

The House of Roses orphanage, based in Makkah, is part of the Umm Al Qura Women Charity association. Their dedicated team provides comprehensive care for orphans to meet their psychological, health, educational and recreational needs, as well as build a community full of love and support.

Zainab Filimban, president, Umm Al Qura Women Charity association in Makkah, said: “The new playground facility and activity lounge are fantastic additions to the center and will really help enhance the girls’ quality of life during their stay with us. We are extremely grateful to the team at AbbVie for helping us make this possible and we hope these new facilities will give the children a chance to find some joy.”

Rami Fayed, regional vice president Middle East and Africa, AbbVie, added: “At AbbVie, we believe that our impact goes beyond medicine, which is why we strive to provide broader support and actively engage in the communities where we live and work. Fun has an important role in boosting children’s development, mental health and happiness. By lending a hand in enhancing the physical play environment for the children staying at the House of Roses orphanage in Makkah, we hope that we can spread a little joy and make a positive impact on their lives.”

Corporate Responsibility (CR) is an integral part of AbbVie’s culture.  The team in Saudi Arabia has contributed over 1,300 hours of volunteering during the past four years to help those who are less fortunate.

Speaking about the experience, Khaled Fageha, human resources manager, AbbVie Saudi Arabia said: “It’s fantastic to give back to our social community part of our time out of working hours to spend in this special yearly practice which will bring smiles to the faces of children who are less fortunate. It is definitely worth the hard work!”

The ‘Week of Possibilities’ is AbbVie’s annual global corporate responsibility program. For the fifth consecutive year, AbbVie employees join forces with nonprofit partners to enhance education and quality of life opportunities for underserved communities through volunteerism and service projects. Approximately 8,000 AbbVie employees in more than 50 countries volunteered 36,000 service hours in their local communities. Over the last 5 years, the AbbVie Foundation – along with AbbVie employee volunteers – have impacted nearly 19 million people around the world.
