|GM sales rise 41% in Saudi Arabia
GENERAL Motors dealers in the Middle East reported total sales of 11,785 vehicles in September 2012, up 20 percent year-over-year and GM's best September sales month since 2008.
GM's strongest sales performance in September was registered in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states where sales increased by 28 percent compared to the same month last year. The highest growth rate was recorded in GM's largest market in the region, Saudi Arabia, where sales increased by 41 percent. Impressive sales growth was also recorded in the UAE and Qatar, which were up 30 percent and 27 percent respectively.
Significant sales gains were experienced across all three GM brands in September with Chevrolet recording 32 percent growth, GMC registering a 22 percent rise and Cadillac increasing sales by 35 percent.
September represented another record sales month for the new Chevrolet Malibu midsize sedan. The eighth generation Malibu, launched in May 2012, continued its recent sales success and passed the 1,000 monthly sales barrier for the first time. GM's year-to-date sales in the GCC are up 11 percent compared to the same period in 2011.
In the first nine months of the year Chevrolet's sales are up 15 percent, GMC is up 4 percent, while Cadillac has registered a 35 percent uplift. The most notable performer has been Chevrolet's rejuvenated passenger car line-up, which includes the Spark mini car, Sonic small car, Cruze compact car as well as the all-new Malibu. Year-to-date sales of the four cars are up 95 percent, a reflection of GM's vision to design and build the world's best vehicles. "Chevrolet's passenger cars have been the launch point of our major product offensive in the Middle East and the reaction from customers has been very positive," said John Stadwick, President and Managing Director of General Motors Middle East.
"These new cars have been the driving force behind our impressive September sales performance. With the introductions of the Chevrolet Colorado, Chevrolet Trailblazer and Cadillac XTS, we are confident that we will maintain this strong sales momentum through to the end of the year."
