Sharjah Girl Guides Further their Technical and Artistic Skills

Sharjah Girl Guides (SGG) and their junior peers, the Brownies, have extended their technical and artistic capabilities at three educational workshops held in August. Targeting both sections of Sharjah’s popular youth movement for girls, the sessions were designed to develop the young attendees’ skills across an array of disciplines and to provide them with gainful and enjoyable activities during the long summer vacation.

Held under the ‘Art badge’ programme, SGG organised the workshop Web Skills with 25 Guides learning how to navigate the web safely and finding out how they can prevent threats from viruses and avoid falling victim to cybercrimes. Hosted by a professional trainer, the activity aimed to build an awareness of the precautions that the girls need to keep themselves secure while browsing online.

Also taking place under the Art badge programme was a ‘3D Casting’ workshop, which saw 15 Guides discovering how to make molds of their hands using clay and gypsum. Participants were also shown how to use various colouring and decoration techniques, embellishing their hand casts with paper cut-outs, string and vibrant colours.

“Sharjah Girl Guides is committed to providing all the necessary means to develop the skills and talents of our Guides and Brownies, especially during the summer holidays. We encourage our members to spend their free time in activities that allow them to both learn and have fun. Our carefully formulated programmes are implemented as part of our endeavor to expand the knowledge of Brownies and Guides in technical, artistic and scientific spheres, as well as to help them discover their personal interests which can help in their choices for education and future careers,” said Sheikha Abdulaziz Al Shamsi, Assistant Manager at SGG.

SGG’s third workshop ‘Art of Science,’ which was held under the ‘Green Badge’ and ‘Social Skills Badge’ programmes, saw the participation of 30 Brownies. The five-day activity saw participants acquainting themselves with a variety of concepts in physics, chemistry and environmental sciences through engaging and fun scientific experiments.

Established in Sharjah in 1973, the Guiding movement subsequently spread to all seven emirates, giving rise to the Girl Guides Association of the United Arab Emirates in 1979. Operating under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, SGG aims to inspire and nurture future generations to become progressive global citizens by providing a platform for girls to develop to their fullest potential.
