Whether it’s your child’s early walking days or you are just trying to find the right school shoe for the upcoming academic year; choosing footwear for children can be tricky if you don’t know what to look for. 1.       At a young age, bones in the foot are soft and malleable. Kids need a shoe that supports them and allows the muscles in the foot to develop as freely as possible.

3.       When buying your children’s shoes, always remember the ‘RULE OF THUMB’: there should be 1.5 cm of space between the tip of the toe to the end of the shoe. This space allows for: 0.5 cm for walking extension, 0.8 cm for the foot to grow over the coming months, and 0.25 cm, that is always taken up by the toe box.

4.       Choose shoes made from lightweight, soft and flexible materials; to give maximum mobility and comfort to the foot.

5.       Breathable materials in uppers are a must. This not just allows the feet to breathe, but also encourages them to wear footwear for longer periods when required.

6.       Go in for a brand that’s trusted for quality, and assures designs that are meant for growing little feet.

7.       Remember that shoes should feel comfortable immediately, and let your child try them on with whatever type of tights or socks that they are likely to use them with. Allowing your child to have a say when buying footwear helps to inculcate a sense of comfort and usability.

8.       Buy shoes at the end of the day, when their feet are at their biggest, and make sure it is at a store that is equipped with trained staff, who can relieve half of your worries.
