Emirates NBD, the largest lender in Dubai in terms of assets, has announced that its customers can now carry out their banking transactions and enquiries through Twitter, a first of its kind offer in the country.

The bank, which has 65,000 followers on Twitter, says the customers can simply tweet for enquiries about their current or savings account or credit card. They can also make enquiries to check the balance available in their accounts and for the previous month’s e-statement, as well to view the last five transactions. The bank claims that it will respond to enquiries instantly.

When asked about how the bank would ensure that security and confidentiality of its customers is not compromised, as Twitter has always been the target of phishing attacks, a spokesperson told AMEinfo that the bank will respond to customers’ enquiries only through the direct message facility of the social media platform to safeguard customer privacy.

“Our customers today have a deep affinity with social media and mobile-based applications and services. By offering innovative banking solutions though these oft-used digital channels, we want to make banking more accessible and fun,” says Suvo Sarkar, Senior Executive Vice-President and Group Head – Retail Banking and Wealth Management at Emirates NBD.

The new service will be available under invitation in the first phase, said the bank which has operations in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and the UK.
