Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) helps Zulekha Hospital patient to regain normal life

An Egyptian expatriate living in the United Arab Emirates has returned to normal life after receiving Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Defibrillator (CRT-D) treatment at Zulekha Hospital in Sharjah to regain her normal heart function.

Fawzia Zakaria Abou ElNasr had a series of health complications, including Atrial Fibrillation, Hypertension, Dilated Cardiomyopathy (decreased ability to pump blood into vessels) and Type 2 Diabetes and also suffered irregular heartbeats, shortness of breath and continuous fatigue.

The Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Defibrillator (CRT-D) implantation, led by Dr Anil Bansal, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Zulekha Hospital, included the pulse generator, or device, and thin insulated wires called leads. The procedure was a preferred immediate solution involving insertion of three leads in the heart to stimulate it from three directions. A CRT device delivers tiny amounts of electrical energy to the heart through these leads. This helped restore the normal timing of the heartbeat, causing both ventricles to pump together more efficiently like a fist closing normally again.*1

Dr Bansal said: “This case is an example of how a normal working woman’s life can be completely disrupted. I have little doubt the patient has been saved by this procedure and we are so pleased to see she has her life back once again and can enjoy the future with her family.”

Since the procedure, Ms. Abou ElNasr has made a good clinical recovery and left the Zulekha Hospital ICU without any complications.

Fawzia Zakaria Abou ElNasr said: “I was experiencing symptoms for two years and when I came for a check-up at Zulekha Hospital in Sharjah I was experiencing an abnormal heartbeat and my blood pressure was unstable. A little walking or work would lead to tiredness and heavy breathing. After the procedure, I have regained my healthy life back and now I’m able to manage my work as well.”
